The company was started in 1889 in Waynesboro, VA according to a Furniture World Magazine dated 1940. They had many styles including what we now call "Mid Century." The items below are all circa 1960s maybe into the early 1970s - their distinct lines were probably their way of interpreting and trying to capture some of the market/consumer interest in the Danish Modern style of the time.
They were bought out by Stanley Furniture (based in Virginia) in the 1970's

BASIC-WITZ FURNITURE INDUSTRIES, Inc., Waynesboro, Va.. manufacturers of bedroom and dining room furniture, have been in existence for fifty years, having started in a small way back in 1889. Their present plants, located at Waynesboro and Staunton, Va. are among the most modern furniture factories.
The company manufactures a popular line of modern and 18th Century bedroom and dining room furniture, desks and secretaries.
Boyd Stombock, the president and treasurer, has been associated with the company since 1908. Paul Hays, vice pftsident and sales manager, has been v/ith the company since 1923. Charles A. Holt, secretary, came into the organization in 1936.[1]

ReplyDeleteI'm on a quest to find a furniture designer, Sanford Wallace, who worked at Basic-Witz. I know he must have passed away but he painted a picture and gave it to my mother in 1935. I would love to locate his family and get it to them. Do you have any info in the archives on this man.
